Poolside Pleasures

Summer is just around the corner and I'm serving up some simple tips to set the proper pool scene! Outdoor FurnitureFor the outdoors, I default to a simple design, as there is already so much natural beauty to work around. I love to let the various colors and shapes of nature speak for themselves. As such, I lean towards outdoor furniture with straight, clean lines, natural textures such as wood or bamboo, or a crisp black or white finish. Fab Suggestions!Consider these durable outdoor fabrics for your next patio set. Add some glamour with a pattern, or keep it solid classic. Poolside EntertainmentI like to dress the pool area with a minimal decor and soft palette to ...

Poolside Pleasures

April has arrived along with the liberating scent of Spring. It's time to get outside and soak in nature's beautiful surroundings. If it were up to me, I would spend endless days basking among billowing gardens, somewhere in France, England or perhaps Tuscany. I crave the rustic, minimal elements of the European style gardens. While I can't always have it my way, imagining and re-creating happens to be my specialty. Here's how I'll be crafting my very own European Garden this season.Luscious Landscapes There's nothing like a bunch of boxwoods to make a statement. These bountiful bushes are uniform yet vibrant, reminding us that simplicity is bold. To add an element of variation, ...

Poolside Pleasures

If one thing is for sure, my creations are not possible without the inspiration behind them. Yet with so many outlets for inspiration, my biggest challenge as a designer is navigating through the many possibilities and arriving at a new vision. In this transient industry, with fleeting trends and ever-changing styles, the key to my designs is simplicity. While I'm always tempted by new trends, funky fabrics and crazy colors, it's hard to surpass the original "pop of color" that a framed piece of artwork can achieve. Consider the following reasons and ways to incorporate art into your home this Spring:COLOR  It's no secret that color is directly correlated with mood and emotion. ...

But since Cupid is coming, why not take the opportunity to channel our inner chic. I like to incorporate elements of the fashion industry into my designs, and this Spring, I'm feeling quite colorful. I'm currently hooked on the soft and sultry vibes evoked from this dusty shade of rose, otherwise known as blush. Check out some of these inspirations and ideas that will have you blushing, too. Blush TonesSoft shades of blush have a beautiful way of blending into a room. In what direction is the design industry going for the new year, you might ask? Bigger is not always better, so not everything needs to be oversized this year. Don't be afraid to juxtapose the big with the small. Try adding tall pedestal tables at each end of the sofa and tie them in with small pendant lights. Dare to be different! Sleep Chic       You only get so many hours of sleep each day, don't get ...

Kate's Countryside Christmas

Poolside Pleasures

As a designer, I never overlook an opportunity to create. With that being said, you could imagine why I adore the Holidays. This Christmas, my Hubby and I will be taking our travels yet again to the English Countryside, which I'm certain will make for an experience nothing short of enchanted. Being with my daughter, Ashleigh, her husband Oliver, and my too-cute-for-words grandson, Morgan, will be absolutely priceless, but no Holiday is truly complete without setting the proper ambiance. You didn't think I would spare the details just because I'll be overseas, did you? As it turns out, the gracious owner of the Stables, where I'll be staying in West Meon, has already offered to set up our ...

Poolside Pleasures

Before      ----->      After Every now and then it comes time for a re-design. No matter how much you once loved a particular look, the styles are ever changing. I recently transformed a dated foyer into a fresh and inviting entryway, and now I'm here to share my design choices with you! I began by working around this timeless French chandelier as a focal point for the space, keeping consistent with the overall style of the house. From there, I decided to go grey in a very ...

Inspiration + Inheritance

Poolside Pleasures

After many years decorating, I realize the enormous effort it takes to pull it all together and place those finishing touches on a project. Simply chosing which fabrics to pull, let alone deciding on the shape of a sofa, or wall color, may seem like small decisions to many. As a designer, these are the final little details which I take the time to hone in on, separating a house from a home. Before getting down to those details, first you'll need to decide where to start! No need to feel overwhelmed, you can always find a starting point in something. Perhaps it's the tone of an old wooden frame, or a piece of crystal orb. Whatever that thing may be, always run with it. Every awe inspiring ...
